How to solve GM MDI Interface not connecting errors?

Here are all solutions aimed to help fix GM MDI multiple diagnostic interface connection/communication issues (connection by usb, wireless ethernet, wired ethernet)… big thanks to all contributors and obdii365.com

For mdi not connecting…

First, you should make sure that the MDI Manager software should be installed on the PC and the MDI must be powered up before you use it to communicate.
Also the MDI should be configured for wired ethernet or wireless communication. If the USB is available, the MDI will connect by using the USB and if not, the MDI will connect by using wired ethernet and if neither of them is available, the MDI will connect by using wireless.
If the MDI can not communicate with the MDI, you should check the cables if they are securely attached to the MDI, if the MDI has completed its power up sequence, if the connector pins are clean and if the MDI Manager software is running.

In detail…. mdi connection can be discussed in the following 4 parts:

Part 1: GM MDI USB connection
Part 2: GM MDI connection by wireless ethernet
Part 3: GM MDI connection by wired ethernet
Part 4: Tech support: GM MDI not connecting

Part 1: GM MDI USB connection

And if you connect them by USB, you need to check the MDI USB connection is detected by windows. About the solutions, you can connect the MDI to the PC USB port and power up the MDI. Open the Network and Dial-up Connections Window from the Windows Control Panel. Then check for the device name ETAS USB Remote NDIS Network Device. If it is not running, check all USB ports on the PC and verify that the MDI is powered on.

GM MDI Manual: What if MDI fails to connect on USB
interface?
Check USB cable connections.
Check Firewall Settings on your PC.
Verify a USB Hub is not being used (MDI has a fixed USB address).
Verify that only one MDI is connected to your PC using USB.
Verify the USB driver has been installed on the PC (look for device name ‘ETAS USB Remote
NDIS Network Device’ under Network Connections).
Try connecting to other USB ports on the PC.

Part 2: GM MDI connection by wireless ethernet

If you connect them by wireless ethernet, you should make sure that wireless communication is enabled and the IP configuration is properly set using the MDI Manager software. Then what you need to check is that the USB cable is not plugged in, the MDI is not being used via wired ethernet and the wireless card is properly seated in the MDI. You can contact your IT department and check that your PC is detecting the wireless access point and the correct security settings have been configured for the MDI.

GM MDI Manual: What if MDI fails to connect on Wireless
interface?
Check the wireless card is properly seated in the WiFi GM MDI.
Confirm LEDs on the wireless card are lighted when the MDI is powered.
Verify the MDI and PC are within range of the Access Point or Router.
Verify that the PC is connected to the Access Point or Router.
Verify signal strength of the wireless network from the PC.
Check Firewall Settings on your PC
USB connection takes precedence, unplug USB cable.
Wired Ethernet connection takes precedence, unplug Ethernet cable.
Connect to MDI using USB and run MDI Manager to verify the Wireless Settings are
configured correctly.
o Wireless interface is enabled.
o AP settings configured for proper security (authentication, encryption).
o Signal Quality (fair, good, excellent) indicates connected to AP.
o The MDI, PC and AP are on the same subnet
o If using static IP, verify the IP Address and Subnet mask are correct (supplied by network
administrator.

Part 3: GM MDI connection by wired ethernet

And if you connect then by wired ethernet, you need to ensure that the wired ethernet communication is enabled and configured using the MDI Manager software. Then you should check that the USB cable is not plugged in and the MDI device detects wired ethernet activity by viewing the lights blinking on the wired ethernet port of the MDI. And also you can contact your local IT department and check that the MDI and the PC are on the same subnet.

GM MDI Manual: What if MDI fails to connect on Wired
Ethernet?
Check Ethernet cable connections.
Check Firewall Settings on your PC.
Verify the MDI and the PC are cabled into separate LAN connections on the same network.
Verify that the PC is properly configured and can communicate on the network.
USB connection takes precedence, unplug USB cable.
Connect to MDI using USB and run MDI Manager to verify the Wired Ethernet Settings are
configured correctly.
o Wired Ethernet interface is enabled.
o If using static IP, verify the IP Address and Subnet mask are correct (supplied by your
network administrator).

SPS Programming: J2534, VXDIAG or GM MDI?

I buy online SPS programming, connect via j2534. VIN reading OK, but when I try program no matter which module I have E4399 error.
Abrites j2534 won’t work with SPS GDS2 and car from 2014 I think. I need to buy MDI multiple diagnostic interface or something else?

Just information for you to make a wise purchase of GM scan tools for SPS programming: (here, I focus on SPS GDS2 on Abrites j2534 and GM MDI)
In the past ( few years ago when I bought my AVDI )

When I bought my tool I used Global Tis v32 and was able to do SPS Programming in my Y20DTH that I have at my desk for tests. All went OK.

After a while during a year of AMS I received the new drivers but because I didn’t like how the AVDI is working and because I make some money using it I dece to upgrade to genuine OEM tool for the brands that AVDI can work.
After a while I bought a genuine MDI.

And after years I did the tests because my friend who has a issue doing SPS Programming. And he asked me to check if its ok at me. And using same ecu that I did SPS Programming alright in the past then now was blocked. So I did and had the same issues as him.
He because has the AMS he received the new drivers after he talked with Abrites company.
For me AVDI its did it job long time ago and I don’t need to buy a new AMS. So I am using when I do what “she” can do.
My friend asked Abrites to fix this issue and they sent to him new drivers versions and then he could do a SPS Programming as well.
But take care this is not working in any ecu.
So my advise for you is to buy a good GM MDI but not VXDIAG VCX Nano and you will be fine.
In my opinion for GM cars and if you wanna do SPS Programming and diagnostics using Tech2win and GDS2 the better is a GM MDI – a genuine or good clone one, or a cheaper cable like a genuine or good clone Mongoose GM Pro2
Or a J2534 tool that its approved by GM.
Maybe for diagnostic AVDI is still good but for programming it will not for sure. But if you wish it you can use it and when you will block first ecu you will remember my opinion.
AVDI I hadn’t used anymore for diagnostic so I cannot tell you if its ok to use it in newer car with GDS2. Actually I have no new drivers for a long.

I just want to show you my experience and tell you my opinion. The decision is yours.
The last, two very important charts for you – might help your purchase

That is,
If you want to do ECU programming or SPS programming, you’d better have a GM MDI interface with Global TIS.

If you need program new keys (only online with GDS2 and Tech2win), it depends.
If you have a new car or pickup truck after the year 2010, you have 3 options: MDI interface, Mangoose cable, Nano;
If you have an old car or pickup truck, you have one more option, Tech 2. That is, 4 options for the old GM vehicles: MDI, Mangoose, Nano and Tech 2.

If you want to have a diagnostic test on GM vehicles, you can have any tool with GDS2 or Tech2win or TIS2000. Clearly, all tools above can be used for GM diagnosis.

Good luck

GM GDS2 Software Full Vehicle List + Test Report

GM Global Diagnostic System 2 (GDS2) full vehicle list with test report from real users:

Good to know “ What is GDS2”:
GDS2 is the GM Global Diagnostic System 2 a PC-based software application. It is designed to diagnose and repair on-board automotive electronic systems. The software application is used with a personal computer and a GM MDI (or J2534-2 equivalent).
gm-gds2-software
GDS2 is simply a newer and better version than GDS1.

GDS2 requires renewing of the license to use it by visiting the Tis To WEB website at least once a month (if you have a yearly subscription).

Tis To Web as it is called is GM’s website to download the scan tool or reflash data to update a vehicles computer.

You download vehicle software to your laptop and then you run the vehicle choice or program to scan from your laptop with the MDI 2 as the interface between your laptop and the vehicle.

You do not HAVE to be ‘online’ to use GDS2, only download the latest software license to use it by visiting Tis To Web monthly.

When you start GDS2, the bottom of the screen shows how many days left till an update is required.

If expired, simply reset the date and time on your laptop/PC, then your license will be renewed and your GDS2 will work.

Online or offline issues:

1: online – good, offline – bad
GM MDI good, interface works online.
update mdi 100%.
offline too bad for new cars.

2: wifi card compatible
at now, chinese clone GM MDI with squ wifi card

3: wifi not working but works good with USB
I bought a cheap one and it only worked with usb. The wired network and wifi did not work. In fact, the card flash socket was missing from the board. Build quality was not to bad. I just use it to flash newer pcm/ecm’s.

GM MDI vs Tech II: MDI wins in running speed & vehicle coverage

I have both clone Tech2 and MDI interface from China. Here, I’ll chip in with my experience and give you some tips if you have a GM and consider buying a tool for it.

MDI/GDS2 is used on C7 Vettes, and other vehicles prior to 2014 (for example, Chev Cruze starting in 2011 uses MDI, as well as others).

I use the Tech2 on my 427 vert as well, and it does everything stand-alone except module recalibration (programming or ‘flashing’).

Btw, There wasn’t a single all-inclusive model year where they cut over from the Tech2 to MDI for all GM models. It had more to do with platforms that were more-or-less fresh designs or clean-sheet designs after about 2008 or so.

Why MDI interface is more preferable for GM:

Flash faster: MDI & GDS2
As for why GM is going to the GM MDI and GDS2, instead of using a Tech II with TIS2000 software, because the MDI with GDS2 flashes a hell of lot faster when you have flash a new module with either it orginal firmware or upgraded firmware. Its also faster to use than having to press buttons on the Tech II for basic commands during diagnostics as well.

Older cars: Tech II & TIS2000
So in regards to the vets, Tech II clone will cover all the C6 cars and older since the last of the updated firmware on the unit covers from here back. If you do need to reflash something, it’s done via Tis2000 with the Tech II as the pass through device.

New & old cars: MDI interface
Since GM did not make upgraded firmware to flash into the Tech II’s to cover these cars like C7, then it’s a MDI that is needed instead. As for the MDI’s firmware, they will cover not only the new cars, but the cars that the old Tech II’s used to cover as well.

Now the glitch on the MDI regarding cloning it, since it has to use the GDS2 software for the pass through only device, GDS2 software has not been cracked like Tis2000 software has been instead.

GM account for subscription: MDI need it
So the only way that even a clone MDI is going to work, is to have a subscription to GM (Few $K a year) to allow you to use the GDS2 software that has to log into GM each time it used instead.

Hence the Clone Tech II unit you get will already be loaded with the most current firmware, and for most of the stuff you going to use the Tech II clone, will just be using the unit by itself without being connected to a laptop.

Also the cracked copy of Tis2000 that you get with the clone model, does not have to be connected/logged into GM to use it for 99% of the stuff (do not need an account with GM).
Note, if push comes to shove and you can not find a copy of the needed firmware to flash into a unit to upgrade a module, then you can get a one day subscription to GM to pull down the needed file from them.

Another place the people have had good luck with as well.
